As a personal trainer, I find that majority of my clients enjoy combination of 1:1 sessions with a class of some kind (Circuits seem most effective in terms of simultaneous weight loss and whole body toning up). But to start with, having at least a few sessions with personal trainer allows you to learn about your own body’s capabilities. Personal trainer is able to pinpoint areas of your body that need special attention by analysing your posture and fitness level. He/she will design a safe and specific programme addressing your very own needs and goals (which is impossible to do for a group teacher who has to create a generalized programme for the whole group, often having to sacrifice safety or intensity). Having received this little bit of fitness education, it will be easier for you to join any class and be able to choose which exercises are suitable/safe for you, know what a teacher is talking about when mentioning different muscle groups/exercises, and to evaluate if the teacher/class is of a high quality and meets your needs. (Alternative way to exercise which combines 1:1 attention of a fitness professional with social side of group training is to book PT sessions with a friend or two which will make them cheaper yet as effective.
